What are Sealants?
Sealants are protective coverings which are applied to the chewing surfaces of back teeth to prevent tooth decay. Tooth decay can compromise a tooth, resulting in the need for fillings, root canals, and even extractions. Prevention is key in terms of protecting teeth from the problems associated with cavities. Sealants are clear in nature and BPA-free. They are ideal for adult and pediatric patients alike.
Why are Sealants necessary?
Sealants may be recommended to you if you are prone to developing cavities, and already have quite a few fillings in your mouth. Children are especially susceptible to cavities because of poor oral hygiene habits and the foods they eat. Sealants can be requested at any time during your treatment, and may even be recommended to you if you are having problems with tooth decay. Sealants can last for up to three years, and can be reapplied as often as needed.

Children are especially good candidates for sealants because of their vulnerability to dental decay. Protecting their teeth from needing fillings and extractions can do a world of good for their overall dental health. Even adults are good candidates for sealants. The procedure can be done in about a half-an-hour in our office, so it’s quick and easy for anyone involved.

Here is what you can expect when you or your child receive dental sealant treatment at our office: No local anesthetic is required to place sealants. An etching solution is applied to the inner grooves of the teeth. Sealants are most effective when placed over the chewing surfaces of the back teeth. The teeth are then cleaned and dried before the actual sealant is applied. The sealant is brushed onto the tooth, and either air or a bright curing light is used to dry and harden the liquid. Your new sealants will last for anywhere from one to about three years and can be reapplied as often as needed.
